Next Generation Learning Standards

About

In 2022, the removal of the ELA Common Core Standards came about through the initatiation of New York State. This was done in effort to reflect the Department’s commitment to aligning education objectives with the evolving industry demands, technological advancements, and changing societal landscape.

The New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards (2017) represent a significant evolution in mathematics education, incorporating revisions, clarifications, and new elements to improve upon previous standards. These standards define the knowledge, skills, and understanding that students consistently develop through instruction and experience over time. At P723X, the shift from Common Core to the Next Generation Learning Standards marked an important step in aligning with these updated expectations. The new standards are cohesive and focused, aiming to provide students with access to the mathematical concepts essential for navigating an increasingly math-dependent world. Additionally, they offer educators the flexibility to design innovative programs that reinforce this understanding. As with any rigorous set of standards, they emphasize a balance of conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and real-world application, ensuring that students are well-prepared for both post-secondary education and the demands of the workforce.
